The Orphanage

In May, 2005 we started construction of Nzoia Rehema Baptist Church. This will provide a place of worship for the children and staff along with the nearby community.

Once the frame is constructed, mud is used to build the walls.
The walls are now finished.
Holes are cut through the sticks and mud to make openings for the metal window frames.

The steel entrance doors are installed.
The boards for the church benches are cut from logs using a chain saw.
The finished benches are placed in the church. Worship services began in July, 2005.

Computer training classes are teaching students from the community the skills they need to get a better job. We will use these computers to teach the children at the orphanage when they are older.
Local residents bring in timber to the woodworking shop to be cut and planed for a small fee. Woodworking skills are also taught at the orphanage.
Furniture made at the woodworking shop is sold to help the orphanage.

Tailoring is taught to local residents and the money from the sale of the clothes helps the orphanage. They also make and repair the clothes for the children at the orphanage. They will be taught to sew when they are old enough.
In October, 2005 we started construction of an additional 6 classrooms for the school. The roof trusses are made from small trees. The current classrooms can be seen in the background.

These additional classrooms will allow more children to attend from the community. They will pay a fee to attend classes at Rehema Acacademy, but the students will receive a higher quality education. This money helps to pay the teacher's salaries for the orphans. The walls are ready to have the mud added.
By November the roof is ready to be installed. The school was completed in December in time for the new classes that started in January.
